Kootenai County
The county's civic identity and lake geography describe different scales of place: the seat is one community, while the county extends into a broader forest-and-water landscape. Established in 1864 and named for the Kootenai people, the county has an identity rooted in Indigenous history as well as later civic development. Coeur d'Alene became its county-seat center. The presence of Lake Coeur d'Alene and part of Lake Pend Oreille gives this administrative history a distinctly northern Idaho geographic setting.

Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Hayden and Rathdrum offer different community reference points within the county. Lake-oriented outings are only one part of the picture. Giving individual towns their own time helps distinguish everyday community life from the larger lake and forest landscapes with which the region is associated.
